Meestal wordt aangenomen dat het azijnsyndroom niet ongedaan kan worden gemaakt. Het kan enkel worden vertraagd door het aangetaste materiaal in aangepaste omstandigheden te bewaren en door een aangepaste behandeling.<ref>Volgens onderzoek zou in bepaalde gevallen, afhankelijk van de mate van het verval, het azijnsyndroom ook gestopt kunnen. VIAA wil bij de digitalisering van het geïnventariseerde filmmateriaal daarom prioriteit geven aan materiaal dat is aangetast door het azijnsyndroom.
