The first principle stipulates that personal data must be processed lawfully, fairly and transparently. There are six cases in which processing is lawful:

1. when the person concerned has given permission;
2. when the processing is necessary for fulfilling an agreement or contract;
3. in the case of representation of a legitimate interest;
4. to comply with a legal obligation;
5. for the protection of vital interests;
6. to fulfill a task of public interest.
