The 3-2-1-1-0 method is the new best practice:
- 3: keep at least three copies of your data, in addition to the original. The chances of something going wrong with all three copies at the same time are low.
- 2: keep your backups on two different storage media.
- 1: keep at least 1 copy offsite, in another location. If you keep your backup in the same location (e.g. the same city), your data could be lost in a disaster such as a flood.
- 1: keep at least 1 copy offline, for example on an external hard drive. It’s strongly recommended that you keep one copy offline. If a hacker gains access to your infrastructure and data, they may be able to access every environment you’re connected to online. In the event of a ransomware attack, you can still access your data if you have a copy stored offline.
- 0: make sure you have a verified backup with no errors.
